Maria Montessori started the first course for the Assistants to Infancy with Adele Costa Gnocchi in 1947 in Rome. She devoted her energies to developing an understanding of the unborn child to the 3year old after she developed the 3 – 6 and 6 – 12 year old programmes. Maria Montessori’s philosophy is based on the scientific observation of the child at various stages of development: infancy, childhood, adolescence and maturity. The three key terms in the Montessori pedagogy for the 0 – 6 year old child are: the Absorbent Mind, Sensitive Periods and the Prepared Environment.
By the time your child is three they will have some level of functional independence, good control over their body’s movements and have complete oral language. That’s a lot to have achieved in just three year! Yet it happened without effort because of the unique quality of the young child’s mind. Your three year old is still very much sensorial explorer. They use their senses to absorb every aspect of the environment, their language and culture, in the process constructing their own intellects. In Montessori we call this the phenomenon the ‘absorbent mind’.
We have a number of parent information evenings to assist parents with learning various aspects of Montessori, child development, positive parenting, etc. Afterwards is a wonderful time to communicate informally with staff and other parent, look at the materials on the shelves and ask questions on their purpose etc. If the meeting gives you specific questions that you would like to ask about your child, we ask that you note it down, make appointment with your child’s teacher and discuss it privately as there could be many underlining issues to discuss. Light refreshments provided.
